Karla is a strategic and agile leader and lawyer with a keen business and value creation mindset with over 20 years of legal experience.
She started her career in civil litigation working for various law firms in San Diego. She realized she preferred providing legal support to companies across all aspects of the business versus litigation. She began her in house career as the first attorney hire and head of Legal/Contracts for The Ken Blanchard Companies a family owned privately held company. She was then brought in to optimize the legal’s functions value to the business serving as publicly traded WD-40 Company’s first Associate General Counsel/Assistant Secretary. Always eager to learn and lean into new opportunities Karla served as the first General Counsel of technology start-up Blockchains Inc. where she led the legal department and participated cross-functionally to help launch a self-sovereign identity application.
Karla has a deep skill set providing support to businesses across many focus areas including complex commercial transactions and licensing, brand protection, privacy, corporate governance and compliance, technology, e-commerce, advertising, competition/consumer claims, supply chain, regulatory, litigation, financial/SEC and non-financial/ESG disclosures, Board of Director support as well as operations, talent acquisition and development.
She is Co-President and on the Board of Directors of SunLaw, Inc. an organization dedicated to the advancement and mentorship of women in-house attorneys. She is also on the Board of Directors of Girls Inc. San Diego an organization committed to the development of underrepresented teenage girls. She also serves as an Advisor for Miracle Babies that provides financial and emotional support to families dealing with the trauma of newborn infants facing significant health challenges. She has served on the Board of Directors of the San Diego New Children’s Museum that offers education to families through exposure and celebration of contemporary art.
She was nominated for the 2018 Athena Pinnacle Awards for Technology and the recipient of the 2016 Women in Wealth Award for Transactions Attorney of the Year by Wealth and Finance International.
She is an advocate for diversity, inclusion, and equity and has a passion for leadership, learning, and the law. She enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, running and helping build community with other advocates for change.
